John Quentin Davies, Baron Davies of Stamford〔(House of Lords Business — 8 July 2010 )〕 (born 29 May 1944) is a British Labour Party politician who was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Grantham and Stamford from 1987 to 2010. Originally elected as a Conservative, he defected to Labour on 26 June 2007. Davies announced in 2010 that he would not stand for re-election in the coming general election. At the general election of 6 May 2010, Nick Boles, a Conservative, was elected in his place. On 28 May 2010 it was announced he would be made a life peer in the Dissolution Honours List. ==Early life and education== Quentin Davies was born in Oxford, the son of a doctor who had served in the Royal Air Force in the Second World War. He went to a preparatory school in Oxford, the Dragon School, before attending the Quaker Leighton Park School, at Reading, then Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where he was awarded a first class Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1966. After graduating he became a Frank Knox Fellow at Harvard.
